Lumbar Physical Therapy
Medford Sports Injury and Therapy Centers offer several back specific physical therapy programs. Listed below are specific lumbar physical therapy programs and the appropriate patient populations.
Lumbar Stabilization Exercises
The Lumbar stabilization exercise program encompasses treating patients low back pain with both functional and cardiovascular exercises. In combination with appropriate therapeutic modalities and manual techniques, the patient is progressed with the goal of maximizing function and decreasing pain.
Diagnoses: Lumbar Strain/Sprain, Disc Injuries, Stenosis, Radiculopathy, Radiculitis, Chronic Back Pain, Unspecified Low Back Pain
Intensive Back Program
The intensive back program is a manually applied resistance exercise treatment designed to strengthen the lumbar stabilization muscles. This is an excellent program to prepare an individual to return to labor intensive positions or sports. This program places the patient in functional positions to maximize strength and endurance. The patient initially performs 8 exercises at low repetitions, and then progresses with increasing reps per each treatment session. Successful discharge culminates with the patient able to perform 12-15 reps against therapist applied resistance.
Diagnoses: Lumbar Strain/Sprain, Mechanical Low Back Pain
Aquatic Lumbar Stabilization
Utilizing the properties of water, aquatic therapy can help a patient make functional gains, where a
land-based environment would be initially inappropriate. The aquatic environment can be used as either a
starting point for acute low back injuries or as a means to allow patients the ability to strengthen stabilizers
to improve overall function.
Diagnoses: Acute Low Back Pain, Muscle Weakness, De-conditioning, Arthritic Conditions
